Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, founded in 1975, is a world-renowned conservation center and home to the largest captive herd of Asian elephants – currently 71. Originally established to care for orphaned elephants, it now focuses on breeding, with over 75 births recorded. Visitors can witness daily activities like feeding and bathing in the river, and learn about the care provided to these magnificent animals. While the orphanage has faced welfare concerns, it remains a popular tourist destination and plays a significant role in elephant conservation in Sri Lanka. Wikipedia
